GAFI – Guardian Glass Discuss Expansion Plans in Egypt

  • For the first time in Africa, Guardian Glass launches a new glass-coating technology that reduces electricity consumption by up to 40%.

In line with the vision of the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Trade (MIFT) to foster an attractive business environment conducive to both domestic and foreign investment, and pursuant to the directives of the Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Dr. Mohamed Farid Saleh to enhance engagement with the business community, accelerate service delivery, and streamline procedures in a manner that strengthens confidence in the investment climate, the Chief Executive Officer of the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI CEO) Eng. Mohamed El-Gawsky met with a delegation from Guardian Glass, a company specializing in architectural façade glass manufacturing, to discuss the company's expansion plans in Egypt. The meeting was attended by Mr. Jean Ries, Director Government and Public Affairs for Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific, and Mr. Saeed Bin Bella, Director of Government Affairs Egypt.

Guardian Industries aims to expand the glass coating production capacity of Guardian Glass Egypt and to manufacture Low-E glass, which reduces electricity consumption within buildings by up to 40%. The company's products provide effective thermal insulation while maintaining high levels of natural daylight.

The company plans to launch its new technology in the Egyptian and African markets for the first time by next June, thus expanding its operations to serve customers in Egypt and to export to Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.

Mr. Jean Ries remarked that Egypt continues to make remarkable progress in developing its infrastructure, along with continuous improvements in the overall investment environment. He added that the company aims to maximize the benefit derived from the high efficiency of the Egyptian workforce and the trade linkages of the Egyptian market with many countries around the world, which facilitates access to global markets, especially the rapidly growing African market, supported by Egypt's strategic geographical location and its membership in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Eng. Mohamed El-Gawsaky stated that Guardian Glass will be one of the primary beneficiaries of the MIFT's plan to establish logistics zones in six African countries: Morocco, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Congo, Kenya, and South Africa. These zones will serve as launching platforms for Egyptian exports to African markets, as MIFT expects Egyptian exports to African markets to register a double-digit growth rate in the coming years.

GAFI CEO reviewed the state's efforts to facilitate the integration of Egyptian industry, including the glass industry, into global value-added chains and export markets. He noted that the customs clearance period was reduced to 5.8 days compared to approximately 15.8 days previously, resulting in a reduction of shipping costs by approximately USD 1.5 billion for Egyptian companies and institutions. This is in addition to the state expenditure of USD 550 billion on developing infrastructure, including roads, ports, and other supporting infrastructure essential to investment activity.
